• What is Notes from Palestine?

Notes from Palestine is a web documentary about Palestinian musicians. More info at the Project-page.

A place to call home

Home is missed the most when it is denied from us.

Palestinians are a nation without a country. Allthough Palestine is today widely recognized as a state, its people lack the rights that citizens of a state should have. The question of the over four million Palestinian refugees in the world remains unanswered.

Yet, millions of people in Palestine call the land their home.

As musicians, the members of Jadal try to make their home a better place in the ways they can. Victor, Wasim, and Joseph contribute to Palestinian society by teaching music. In the search of ones identity, cultural belonging is something essential. In the search of this cultural identity, art can be a valuable tool.

This video clip is the last one for the documentary – for now! Updates will be made in the future, so keep on following. Also spread the link to people who might be interested on seeing a different side of Palestine. Or to someone who is just interested to hear some nice oud. The site is not going anywhere.

Behind the scenes of the last episode…

Some additional info about the episode “Mobility issues”.

The episode was not an easy one to produce, since filming in Israeli military areas is strictly forbidden. The problem is, that these “military areas” – soldiers, checkpoints, areas surrounding the West Bank barrier etc. – are everywhere.

On the trip to Jericho we passed a few checkpoints. On the first one the Israeli soldiers saw our camera, stopped the vehicle and interrogated us for 30 minutes. The material filmed around the checkpoint had to be erased, or filmed “black”. Afterwards we heard that we can be considered lucky: Sometimes cameras are confiscated and never returned.

Personally, it doesn’t feel nice to be bullied by soldiers pointing their rifles at you. However Wasim, Joseph and John didn’t bother much since for them it is considered normal, daily life. They were only conserned about being late for their music show.

“Walla, this is your life, when you just want to go and play music for little kids”.
– Wasim

Mobility issues

Moving from one place to another is extremely difficult in Palestinian territories. Some of the Palestinian roads are in bad condition and cut by Israeli checkpoints. Thousands of Palestinians spend hours every day waiting to get through these checkpoints just so that they can get to work, school etc. It is common not to get a permission to pass through.

Wasim, Joseph and their colleague John deal with the problem every day. As workers of Sabreen, they need to travel to different locations in West Bank, so that they can perform in schools.

Today they take a trip to Jericho, the city claimed to be the oldest city in the world. The distance between Jericho and Bethlehem is around 40 kilometres, but since travelling the Palestinian way is slow, they need the whole day.

Join the men and see how their trip to Jericho went!

New episode – Music for everyone

Palestinian musicians usually can’t support themselves by music. Therefore Joseph and Wasim can be considered lucky: They work at Sabreen, an association aiming to develop the musical education in Palestine. Part of their job is having musical performances in schools around West Bank.

The idea is “Music for Everyone”. The message is that everyone can make music and that your musical instruments can be found everywhere.

See Joseph and his colleague John having their musical performance “Friends” at Dheisheh refugee camp, the largest refugee camp in Bethlehem area.

A bridge between east and west

Jadal is an active group of Palestinian musicians. When Victor, Wasim and Joseph have freetime from their daily routine, they rearrange old songs and compose new material.

The music of Jadal has no words, but it holds a clear message. Only through dialogue different cultures can meet. Music can be a powerful tool in bringing people together.

The occupation of Palestine reflects in every Palestinian form of art. Jadal makes no exception. For Victor, Wasim, and Joseph, Jadal is a valuable tool for self-expression and for relieving stress. A window to shout out their need for peace and freedom.
